A targeted blast at a mosque in northwestern Pakistan on Friday left four people injured, including a prominent Islamist leader and two children, according to police reports. The explosion appeared to be aimed at Abdullah Nadeem, a local leader of the Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) political party, Reuters reported.
South Waziristan District Police Chief Asif Bahadar confirmed that Nadeem sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized. The attack is the latest in a series of escalating violent incidents in Pakistan’s border regions with Afghanistan.
Escalating Attacks in Pakistan’s Border Regions
The latest attack follows a suicide bombing in February at an Islamic seminary in northwestern Pakistan, which claimed the lives of six worshippers during Friday prayers. The seminary has historically been a key training center for the Afghan Taliban.
BLA Militants Hijack Train, Take Over 300 Passengers Hostage
Earlier this week, on Tuesday, militants from the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) carried out a brazen attack on the Jaffar Express train in the Bolan district, taking over 300 passengers hostage. The militants, positioned in the surrounding mountains, launched an explosion that brought the train to a halt before taking control of the passengers.
A video of the incident showed armed militants parading the hostages while making demands for the release of their jailed members. Pakistani security forces responded with a full-scale operation despite threats to execute the captives. The rescue mission was further complicated as several militants were seen wearing suicide vests near the hostages.
After an intense confrontation, security forces successfully rescued all 346 hostages, though 30 militants and 28 soldiers were killed during the operation. The BLA, however, claimed to have executed 50 additional hostages who were taken from a separate Peshawar-bound train.
Growing Security Concerns
The recent surge in militant attacks underscores the growing security challenges facing Pakistan, particularly in its border regions and transport networks. With extremist groups such as the BLA and Taliban-linked factions intensifying their operations, the government faces mounting pressure to bolster counterterrorism measures.
