Dehradun: In a novel initiative aimed at streamlining public distribution, Uttarakhand has launched "Green Ration ATMs," allowing beneficiaries to withdraw grains just like cash from traditional ATMs. This move seeks to eliminate long queues at ration shops and provide a more convenient access to essential food items.
The Green Ration ATM, a first-of-its-kind project in the state, is designed to simplify the ration distribution process. Similar in appearance to regular ATMs, these machines dispense grains instead of currency. This allows ration card holders to withdraw their allotted quota of wheat and rice according to their family's needs, without the hassle of waiting in long lines. Each machine is capable of dispensing up to 30 quintals of grain per day.
The pilot project has been launched in Dehradun, Rishikesh, Sahaspur, and Vikasnagar, where the machines have been installed and are undergoing testing. Ration distributors have also been provided with training on how to operate these machines.
This is not the first instance of such technology being used for food distribution in India. Previously, the Odisha government launched "Rice ATMs," and in 2021, Haryana introduced the country's first Green ATM in Gurugram, offering 24/7 access to wheat and rice.
Using the Green Ration ATM is straightforward. Beneficiaries must possess a valid ration card. Upon entering their ration card number into the machine, they will be presented with information regarding their allotted grain quantities. They can then select the desired amount of wheat and rice and dispense it from the machine. This user-friendly system is expected to significantly improve the efficiency of ration distribution and ensure seamless access to essential commodities for the public.
This innovative approach is expected to bring a significant change in the way food is distributed to the needy, ensuring a smooth and transparent system.
