Vadodara Car Crash: Law Student Arrested After Fatal Collision

Vadodara, March 15, 2025 – Rakshit Ravish Chaurasia, a 23-year-old law student, was arrested in connection with a fatal car crash in Vadodara, Gujarat, that claimed the life of a woman and left four others injured. The incident occurred late Thursday night near Muktanand Crossroads in the Karelibaug area.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Panna Momaya, eyewitnesses at the scene reported that Chaurasia appeared intoxicated, with some claiming he was shouting, "Another round, another round" upon exiting the vehicle. However, Chaurasia denied being under the influence and attributed the accident to potholes on the road, stating that he lost control of the car while traveling at approximately 50 km/h.

“The car was automatic, and when the airbags deployed, I panicked and mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brakes,” Chaurasia told reporters. Expressing remorse, he described the tragedy as an “understatement” and expressed his willingness to meet the victim’s family, acknowledging his responsibility.

Public Reaction and Social Media Backlash

Chaurasia’s claims of innocence have sparked widespread outrage on social media. Users questioned how the accused was able to address the media despite being in police custody. One user, Tanmoy, posted on X, “Is he now released from police custody? A brutal crime accused is holding a press meet.” Another user compared the incident to the Pune hit-and-run case, where a juvenile offender was asked to write an essay on road safety as part of his sentencing.

Police Investigation and Evidence

The victim has been identified as Hemali Patel, who was riding her scooter at the time of the collision. Authorities have confirmed that Chaurasia, originally from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, resides in Vadodara as a paying guest while pursuing his law degree at MS University.

The vehicle involved in the accident was registered to Chaurasia’s friend, Mit Chauhan, who was in the co-driver’s seat at the time of the crash. Efforts are currently underway to locate Chauhan.

Video footage captured by eyewitnesses shows Chauhan exiting the heavily damaged vehicle and holding Chaurasia responsible for the accident. Another video, captured by CCTV cameras, depicts the speeding car striking two scooters, dragging the riders before coming to a halt.

Authorities suspect that overspeeding played a key role in the crash and are investigating the possibility of drunk driving. “A medical examination will be conducted to determine whether Chaurasia was under the influence of alcohol,” said DCP Momaya, adding that the accused does possess a valid driver’s license.

Further investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
