An Air India Boeing carrying hundreds of people from India crashed shortly after taking off.
The plane was en route from the airport in the western city of Ahmedabad to London's Gatwick Airport.
The plane took off from Ahmedabad at 1.39 pm. The pilot reportedly transmitted a 'Mayday' distress signal to the air traffic control immediately after takeoff. The ATC also said that communication with the plane was later lost.
Initial reports indicate that 110 (updated) people on board the crashed Air India flight have died. Of these, 40 bodies have been shifted to hospitals. Many injured people have been admitted to various hospitals in Ahmedabad.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was carrying 242 passengers, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members.
Of the 242 passengers on the Air India flight that crashed shortly after takeoff from Patel Airport, 61 were foreigners.
The flight from Ahmedabad to London was carrying 53 British nationals. Preliminary information suggests that there were one Canadian and seven Portuguese nationals on board. The remaining 169 people were Indians. There were 12 crew members on board along with them.
