Altercation Aboard Vande Bharat Express Involving BJP MLA Sparks Controversy

New Delhi | June 24, 2025 — A passenger aboard the New Delhi–Bhopal Vande Bharat Express was reportedly assaulted on June 19 following a dispute over a seat involving Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Rajeev Singh, who represents the Babina constituency in Jhansi.

Surveillance footage from the train, which has since circulated widely on social media, appears to show a group of individuals physically attacking a male passenger seated near the automated door of the coach. The incident has raised concerns regarding the conduct of public representatives and the safety of passengers on board premium trains.

According to initial accounts, the confrontation allegedly began when the passenger refused to exchange his seat—reportedly at the request of MLA Rajeev Singh or his associates. The situation later escalated at Jhansi railway station, where the passenger was allegedly assaulted by individuals purportedly connected to the legislator.

In response, MLA Singh filed a non-cognizable report (NCR) against the passenger, alleging indecent behavior during the journey. In his complaint, Singh stated that the co-passenger misbehaved with his wife and son, and later summoned others at Jhansi station who also acted in a threatening manner.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) confirmed the altercation was related to a dispute over seat changes and behavior within the train compartment. “The issue appears to have stemmed from objections regarding seating arrangements and posture,” a GRP spokesperson said.

Railway Superintendent of Police (Jhansi), Vipul Kumar Srivastava, told reporters that the assaulted passenger had initially expressed his intent to lodge a complaint upon arrival in Bhopal. However, as of Friday afternoon, Bhopal Railway Police had not received any formal complaint from the individual.

Authorities have stated that further action will be taken upon receipt of a formal grievance from the second party.

The incident has prompted wider discussion on passenger rights and the responsibilities of public officials while travelling on state-operated transport services.
