A potentially catastrophic incident was averted at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Monday morning when an Air India flight arriving from Kochi experienced a runway excursion while landing in heavy rainfall. While the aircraft sustained visible damage, all passengers and crew were reported safe.
According to a statement issued by Air India, Flight AI2744, operating on July 21, 2025, encountered intense rain during its final approach and veered off the runway shortly after touchdown at approximately 9:27 AM.
Emergency response protocols were immediately activated, and the aircraft was safely taxied to the gate. All passengers and crew were promptly and safely disembarked.
"Flight AI2744, operating from Kochi to Mumbai on July 21, experienced heavy rain during landing, resulting in a runway excursion after touchdown. The aircraft taxied safely to the gate, and all passengers and crew members have since disembarked," an Air India spokesperson confirmed.
The aircraft has since been grounded for a comprehensive technical inspection and safety checks. Visuals from the scene showed damage to parts of the aircraft, though the extent of the damage is yet to be officially assessed.
Airport authorities and airline officials are investigating the incident in accordance with aviation safety norms.
