OTTAWA | July 10, 2025 — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday issued a strong response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of new 35% tariffs on Canadian exports, reaffirming his government’s commitment to defending domestic industries and fostering continued cross-border collaboration
.
“The Canadian government has steadfastly defended our workers and businesses,” Carney stated in a message posted on social media. He further emphasized Canada’s efforts to address broader regional issues, notably the ongoing opioid crisis. “Canada has made vital progress in combating the fentanyl epidemic across North America,” he said.
Carney added that despite rising trade tensions, Canada remains committed to working alongside the United States to “save lives and protect communities in both our countries.”
The Prime Minister’s remarks come in the wake of President Trump’s latest protectionist measures, which mark a sharp escalation in trade friction between the two nations. Although the White House has yet to release a comprehensive list of affected products, U.S. officials have framed the tariffs as part of a broader strategy to strengthen American manufacturing and reduce trade deficits.
Carney reiterated Canada’s stance amid ongoing negotiations: “We will continue to stand firm as we approach the revised negotiation deadline of August 1.”
The renewed trade dispute has prompted concern among Canadian exporters and international observers, who warn of potential disruptions to the deeply integrated North American supply chain. At the same time, Carney’s administration is seeking to balance a firm defense of national economic interests with efforts to maintain stability in one of Canada’s most critical bilateral relationships.
