Iran Warns Reimposing Sanctions Will Complicate Nuclear Talks Ahead of E3 Meeting

Iran has cautioned that any move to reimpose international sanctions would further complicate efforts to resolve the ongoing standoff over its nuclear programme. The statement comes ahead of a high-level meeting with European powers scheduled for Friday in Istanbul.

According to Iranian state media, Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that Iran would present its official position on the proposed “snapback” mechanism during the talks with the E3 nations—Britain, France, and Germany.

“We will express our position regarding the E3's comments on the snapback mechanism, which we believe lacks any legal basis,” Gharibabadi said. “Nonetheless, our effort will be to see if we can find common solutions to manage the situation.”

The E3 countries have indicated that unless substantial progress is made by the end of August, they may trigger the snapback provision—an action that would restore U.N. sanctions previously lifted under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The deal offered Iran sanctions relief in exchange for strict limitations on its nuclear activities.

The United States unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018, prompting a gradual deterioration of the agreement’s implementation. Despite ongoing negotiations, Iran and the remaining signatories—Britain, France, Germany, China, and Russia—have struggled to restore full compliance.

“It has now been seven years since the nuclear deal ceased to be properly implemented by the Europeans following the U.S. withdrawal,” Gharibabadi noted. “How can they accuse Iran of non-compliance when they themselves have failed to uphold their commitments?”

Tehran continues to insist that its nuclear programme is strictly for civilian use and denies any intention to develop nuclear weapons.

The upcoming meeting is seen as a critical juncture in determining whether diplomatic avenues remain viable or if the international community will move toward renewed punitive measures.
