Kannur: A powerful explosion at a rented house in Keezhara, Kannapuram, in the early hours of Saturday claimed the life of one person. The blast, which occurred around 2 a.m., is believed to have taken place during the manufacture of fireworks.
The explosion completely destroyed the house and caused damage to several nearby residences. Police said the body of the deceased, reportedly a migrant worker, was found in a mutilated state.
The house, owned by a man named Govindan, had been rented to Anoop, who, according to locals, was engaged in the fireworks trade. Neighbours also stated that people usually visited the house only at night and that the lights were rarely switched on.
Police and a bomb squad have cordoned off the area and begun a detailed investigation. Locals said two people were inside the house at the time of the blast. Further inquiries are underway.
