Sokoto, Nigeria: More than 40 people remain missing after a boat carrying around 50 passengers capsized on Sunday while en route to Goronyo market, a major food produce hub in northwest Sokoto State, authorities said.
Ten passengers have been rescued so far, according to Zubaidar Umar, head of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), who confirmed the development in a statement on social media platform X. Rescue efforts are underway in coordination with local authorities and emergency responders to locate the missing individuals.
The incident highlights recurring safety concerns on Nigeria’s waterways. Just three weeks ago, at least 13 people were killed and dozens went missing when a vessel carrying about 100 passengers overturned in Niger State, north-central Nigeria.
