Panel to Probe Burnt Cash Recovery at Former Delhi HC Judge’s Residence; Impeachment Motion Admitted

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday announced the formation of a three-member committee to investigate the recovery of a pile of burnt cash from the residence of former Delhi High Court Judge Yashwant Varma.

The panel will comprise Supreme Court Judge Justice Aravind Kumar, Madras High Court Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava, and senior Karnataka counsel B.V. Acharaha. Birla also confirmed that he has accepted an impeachment motion against Justice Varma, signed by 146 Members of Parliament.

According to the Speaker, the Supreme Court’s committee has recommended initiating removal proceedings against the former judge. “A motion for impeachment has been submitted against Yashwant Varma. Cash was recovered after a fire broke out at his residence. We have examined the provisions of the Judges Inquiry Act and reviewed the details of the complaint. The Chief Justice of Delhi considered the matter serious, and subsequently, the Chief Justice of India determined that an investigation was necessary. The committee’s report has recommended his removal,” Birla stated.

He further added, “The matter is pending, and an investigation will be carried out. The proposal to remove Justice Yashwant Varma is being placed before the House. I have approved the formation of this committee, and the removal process will proceed in accordance with constitutional provisions.”
