Kyiv and its surrounding region came under one of the heaviest Russian bombardments since the start of the full-scale war, as waves of drones and missiles struck the Ukrainian capital early Sunday.
According to Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, at least three people were killed and around 10 others injured. Among the dead was reportedly a 12-year-old girl, though her identity has not been officially confirmed.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the assault as a “massive” airstrike involving hundreds of missiles and drones. He urged Western allies to intensify punitive measures against Moscow. “Putin must feel the danger of continuing this war — personally for him, his cronies’ pockets, his economy, and his regime. That is what can make him stop this senseless war,” Sybiha wrote on X.
Widespread Strikes Across Ukraine
The attacks were not confined to Kyiv. Authorities reported that at least 16 people, including three children, were injured in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, where several residential buildings were damaged and set ablaze. Social media footage from the region showed fires and emergency crews battling to contain the destruction.
In Kyiv, residents endured hours of aerial bombardment as drones buzzed overhead and anti-aircraft fire lit up the night sky. Loud explosions echoed across the city, and by 9:15 a.m. (0615 GMT), the assault was still ongoing, according to eyewitnesses.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a fire broke out at a state cardiological hospital following the strikes, adding to the mounting civilian toll. Many residents sought refuge in metro stations deep underground, where families set up makeshift beds or sat on folding chairs, glued to their phones for updates.
Regional Response
The strikes prompted immediate concern from neighboring Poland, which briefly closed airspace near two southeastern cities. The Polish Air Force also scrambled fighter jets as a precautionary measure.
The latest bombardment underscores the intensifying scale of Russia’s campaign against Ukraine’s cities, further fueling calls from Kyiv for stronger international sanctions and military support.
