The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) deployed 274 “plainclothes agents” during the January 6, 2021, Capitol Hill riot, according to a report by conservative outlet Blaze News, which cited an unnamed senior congressional source.
The claim stands in contrast to the bureau’s repeated denials of a large undercover presence during the unrest. In late 2023, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of Inspector General stated that no FBI “undercover employees” were embedded in the crowds, though it acknowledged that 26 confidential informants were present. Four of those informants reportedly entered the Capitol with rioters, while three were dispatched to Washington afterward to monitor potential domestic terrorism suspects.
Blaze News noted that its revelations may not directly contradict the inspector general’s report, since the bureau could draw distinctions between “undercover employees” and “plainclothes agents.”
Trump’s Reaction
The report immediately drew a strong response from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has long accused federal agencies of misconduct over the handling of January 6. Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump pledged to investigate the matter if confirmed.
“I want to know who each and every one of these so-called ‘agents’ are, and what they were up to on that now ‘historic’ day. Many great American patriots were made to pay a very big price only for the love of their country. I owe this investigation of ‘dirty cops and crooked politicians’ to them! Christopher Wray, the then-Director of the FBI, has some major explaining to do,” Trump declared.
He further alleged that FBI personnel may have acted as “agitators and insurrectionists” during the riot, vowing that “dirty cops and crooked politicians” would be held accountable.
The FBI has yet to formally respond to the new claims.
