Udupi Man Loses ₹48,500 in Online Fraud; Case Registered

UDUPI: A Union Bank customer was duped of ₹48,500 in an online fraud after his ATM PIN was allegedly reset by unidentified fraudsters.

The complainant, Umesh, reported that on August 30, while at home, he received a series of suspicious messages from unknown numbers. At 10:48 a.m., he received a notification stating that his ATM PIN had been reset and a new one generated. Moments later, another alert informed him of a debit of ₹48,500 from his account.

When Umesh approached his bank branch, officials confirmed that the amount had been transferred to an unknown account. It is suspected that cybercriminals gained unauthorized access to his account, reset the PIN, and diverted the funds.

Based on Umesh’s complaint, Udupi Town Police registered a case under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 66(D) of the Information Technology Act.
