On Saturday, residents and visitors at Harvard Beach in Ankola Taluk were treated to a rare spectacle as large numbers of fish were swept ashore by the waves. Despite traditional fishermen putting in hours of effort, casting their nets repeatedly, the bounty of fish arriving onshore far exceeded expectations.
The sight of entire schools of fish being washed ashore by the waves left even the experienced fishermen astonished. Some enterprising onlookers managed to catch a few fish that had struggled back into the water. News of the unusual phenomenon quickly spread, drawing crowds from nearby villages eager to collect fish along the shore.
“This is an extraordinary occurrence,” said local resident Sayyiran. “It’s rare to see such large numbers of fish, including blackfish and other species, stranded along the coastline.”
Shivakumar Haragi, head of the local Postgraduate Marine Biology Center, explained, “This is unlikely to be caused by minor weather changes. It’s possible that dolphins or whales pursued the fish school, and in an attempt to escape, the fish ended up being driven ashore.”
