Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday asserted that India has “completely cut back” on its imports of Russian oil, following a new round of American sanctions targeting Moscow’s energy sector.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said both India and China had reduced their purchases of Russian crude after Washington intensified restrictions on Russia’s major oil firms. “China’s cutting back very substantially on the purchase of Russian oil, and India’s cutting back completely,” Trump said. “We’ve imposed sanctions, and I may be discussing this further,” he added.
The remarks come ahead of Trump’s scheduled meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea next week. The high-profile visit is expected to cover a wide range of issues, including Russian oil imports, U.S. agricultural exports, and the global fentanyl crisis. “I want our farmers to be taken care of, and he wants things also,” Trump said. “We’re going to be talking about fentanyl — it’s killing a lot of people, and it comes from China.”
Fresh Sanctions on Russian Energy Giants
Earlier this week, Trump announced a new round of sanctions targeting Russian oil majors Rosneft and Lukoil. The measures are part of Washington’s broader effort to curb Moscow’s ability to finance its military operations through energy exports.
However, New Delhi has firmly rejected Trump’s assertions, reiterating that India’s energy policy remains driven by national interests and the imperative of securing affordable supplies. Indian officials have maintained that the country has not agreed to any U.S.-led reduction in Russian oil purchases.
Trade and Strategic Talks with China
Despite rising tensions between Washington and Beijing over trade restrictions, technology bans, and access to raw materials, Trump struck an optimistic note ahead of his meeting with Xi. He described the talks as an opportunity to “reset” bilateral relations and potentially achieve a “complete deal” addressing multiple economic and security concerns.
“We’ll be talking about a lot of things,” Trump said, signaling that the discussions could mark a turning point in U.S.-China relations amid a volatile global geopolitical landscape.
