Jalpaiguri, West Bengal: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Khagen Murmu, who represents the Malda Uttar constituency, sustained serious head injuries after being attacked in the flood-affected Jalpaiguri district on Monday.
Disturbing visuals from the scene showed the blood-soaked MP sitting inside a car, visibly injured, while security personnel attempted to assist him. His scarf appeared drenched in blood as officers handed him a handkerchief, though bleeding continued. The car’s front windshield was cracked, and the side window near the driver’s seat was completely shattered, indicating the intensity of the assault.
Political Reactions and Accusations
The incident sparked sharp political reactions, with BJP leaders directly blaming the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the state administration for the attack.
BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya accused the ruling party of lawlessness, saying:
“TMC’s Jungle Raj in Bengal! BJP MP Khagen Murmu, a respected tribal leader and two-time MP from North Malda, was attacked by TMC goons while on his way to Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri’s Dooars region to assist with relief and rescue operations after devastating rains, floods, and landslides.”

He further alleged that while Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was “dancing at her Kolkata Carnival,” the state government and administration were “missing in action.”
“Those actually helping people — BJP leaders and workers — are being attacked for doing relief work. This is TMC’s Bengal, where cruelty rules and compassion is punished,” Malviya said.
Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari Condemns Attack
Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, also condemned the attack, calling it evidence of what he termed a “panic-stricken” response from the state government.
“Mamata Banerjee is in full panic mode. She realized, albeit late, that the people of Bengal were outraged by her inhuman act of dancing at a carnival with celebrities while North Bengal reeled under floods and landslides,” Adhikari wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
He alleged that the chief minister had “unleashed her goons” to prevent BJP MPs and MLAs from engaging in relief efforts.
“MP Khagen Murmu was brutally attacked and left with severe injuries in Nagrakata when he accompanied BJP Bengal President Samik Bhattacharya to flood-affected areas. MLA Dr. Shankar Ghosh’s vehicle was also attacked — in the presence of police,” Adhikari claimed.
He concluded his post with a warning to the ruling party:
“Mamata Banerjee, you can’t intimidate the BJP.”
Investigation Underway
Police have not yet issued a detailed statement on the incident. BJP leaders have demanded a thorough investigation and strong action against those responsible. The attack comes at a time when North Bengal continues to grapple with widespread flooding, landslides, and significant loss of life and property.
