Lucky Ali Slams Javed Akhtar After Controversial Remarks Resurface

A heated exchange has erupted between veteran lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar and singer Lucky Ali, after a resurfaced video clip of Akhtar sparked controversy on social media.

Lucky Ali took to X (formerly Twitter) to mock the celebrated writer, sharing a post that indirectly targeted Akhtar. The dispute stems from an old clip in which Akhtar is seen urging the Hindu community not to become “rigid or reactionary” in their approach—a statement that has drawn mixed reactions from both Hindu and Muslim audiences.

Javed Akhtar, known for his atheist views and outspoken criticism of regressive traditions across communities, has long advocated for rational thinking, social reform, and progressive change. However, his recent remarks appear to have struck a nerve among people from both religious groups.

In the viral clip, Akhtar references the classic 1975 film Sholay, saying:

“There’s a scene where Dharmendra hides behind a statue of Lord Shiva and speaks, making Hema Malini believe that Lord Shiva is talking to her. Could such a scene be written today? No, I wouldn’t write it today. But back in 1975, were there no Hindus? Were there no devout people? Of course there were.”

He goes on to recall a past event, stating,

“When I was speaking before a large audience in Pune, I said—‘Don’t become like Muslims. Make them like you. But you are becoming like them. That’s a tragedy.’”

While the authenticity of the resurfaced clip has not been independently verified, the remarks triggered a sharp response from Lucky Ali, who posted:

“Don’t be like Javed Akhtar. Never be f***ing original and disgusting like him.”

Despite the outrage, such criticism is not new to Javed Akhtar, who has often faced backlash from conservative sections across religious and social lines. The celebrated writer, however, remains vocal about his views, continuing to spark debate within India’s cultural and cinematic circles.
