NEW DELHI — India has summoned a Pakistani diplomatic representative and lodged a strong protest over a recent incident along the international border in Punjab’s Ferozepur sector. The Ministry of External Affairs said India also raised concerns over what it described as continued support from Pakistan for illegal cross-border infiltration.
According to the Indian government’s account, three people crossed into Indian territory from the Pakistani side of the border. The Border Security Force (BSF) repeatedly warned them to return, but they continued moving towards the border fence. The BSF subsequently took action after assessing the movement as a security threat, the Ministry of External Affairs said.
India described the incident as part of cross-border activities linked to armed drug-smuggling networks operating from Pakistan. New Delhi also rejected allegations raised by Pakistan regarding the incident and said that its position had been conveyed to the Pakistani representative through diplomatic channels.
The Indian government urged Pakistan to respect the security of the international border and existing bilateral understandings. It also called for steps to prevent similar incidents from occurring again.
