Dharashiv (Maharashtra): In a shocking incident that has shaken the local farming community, a cooperative bank in Dharashiv was robbed of jewelry and cash worth ₹2.1 crore. The stolen gold and silver ornaments belonged primarily to farmers who had pledged their small pieces of jewelry to secure loans for essential needs. The theft has sparked widespread distress among these rural families, many of whom now face uncertainty and financial hardship.
According to police reports, the heist took place on August 3 at the Tuljapur branch of the Lokmangal Multistate Cooperative Society. After weeks of investigation, the Crime Branch of the Dharashiv Police cracked the case, arresting a peon employed by the cooperative society in connection with the theft.
The accused has been identified as 28-year-old Datta Kamble, who allegedly decamped with approximately ₹34.6 lakh in cash and 2.7 kilograms of gold jewelry. After committing the crime, Kamble is said to have fled Dharashiv and gone into hiding in a slum area of Nagpur city, where he was eventually tracked down and arrested.
In an unusual turn of events, the police revealed that the arrest was made possible with the assistance of 22 sex workers, who provided crucial information leading to the accused’s location. Dharashiv Superintendent of Police Ritu Khokar confirmed the breakthrough and praised the coordinated effort of multiple police units involved in the investigation.
A case was registered at the Tuljapur Police Station the day after the incident under Sections 331(3), 331(4), and 305 of the IPC. Given the magnitude of the theft, senior officers assigned the investigation to the Local Crime Branch (LCB). Additional teams from the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) and the local police were also deployed to expedite the probe.
