“They wouldn’t invite us to weddings or social gatherings because we didn’t have proper clothes. People used to say our presence would bring shame,” : Bangladesh Cricketer Marufa Akter

Bangladesh’s young pace sensation Marufa Akter made a stunning debut in the Women’s World Cup 2025, leaving an indelible mark with her skill and composure. The 20-year-old, playing her first World Cup match against Pakistan, delivered a brilliant spell—claiming the prized wickets of Omaima Sohail and Sidra Amin while conceding just 31 runs in seven overs.

Marufa’s performance proved to be the turning point of the match, as Pakistan faltered under pressure and failed to set a competitive total. Bangladesh went on to win convincingly by seven wickets, and Marufa was rightfully named Player of the Match for her impactful bowling.

Following her sensational debut, several cricket experts hailed Marufa as one of the finest emerging fast bowlers from the subcontinent, praising her exceptional ability to swing the ball both ways. Hailing from Nilphamari, a rural district in Bangladesh, Marufa’s rise from humble beginnings to international recognition is nothing short of inspiring.

Despite her growing fame, the young cricketer remains grounded and deeply connected to her roots. In an emotional reflection on her struggles, Marufa opened up about the financial hardships her family endured.

“They wouldn’t invite us to weddings or social gatherings because we didn’t have proper clothes. People used to say our presence would bring shame,” Marufa recalled tearfully. “There was a time when we couldn’t even afford new clothes for Eid.”

Her father, a farmer, struggled to support the family, and Marufa often faced discouragement from her community. Yet, through determination and perseverance, she turned her circumstances into motivation.

“My father is a farmer, and we didn’t have much money. The people in our village weren’t very supportive,” she said. “But now, the way I support my family gives me peace. Perhaps many boys can’t do what I’ve done. As a child, I used to wonder when people would look at us with admiration. Now, when I see myself on TV, I still feel shy,” she added with a laugh.

Marufa Akter’s story is a testament to resilience, humility, and the transformative power of sport. From battling financial struggles in a small village to shining on the world stage, she has become a symbol of hope for countless aspiring athletes across South Asia.
