Mysuru Police Shoot and Injure Accused in Rape and Murder of Minor Girl

MYSURU, October 10—Police have shot and injured a man suspected of the horrific rape and murder of a young girl who had arrived in Mysuru to sell balloons during the Dasara festival. The accused, identified as Karthik K.R., a resident of Siddalingapura, Mysuru, sustained a gunshot wound to the leg while allegedly trying to escape police custody. He is currently receiving treatment at KRS Hospital.


Details of the Heinous Crime

The victim belonged to the Hakki Pikki nomadic community from Kalaburagi. Her family was among approximately 50 such families temporarily camping near the lake in front of the palace to earn a living during the festive season.

The young girl was sleeping next to her parents after completing her work when she went missing overnight. At around 6:30 AM, her body was tragically discovered in a ditch near the encampment, showing clear signs of sexual assault and murder. Following the grim discovery, the family immediately alerted the authorities.

Manhunt and Dramatic Encounter

The Nazarbad Police Station swiftly registered a case and launched an extensive search.

Tracking the Suspect: Based on an analysis of CCTV footage, police identified the assailant. They quickly determined he had boarded a bus at the Mysuru bus stand headed for Kollegal.

Attempted Escape: A police team successfully tracked down and apprehended Karthik. However, while being transported back to Mysuru near Metagalli, the accused attempted a dramatic escape. When officers tried to restrain him, he reportedly attacked Constable Venkatesh.

Police Firing: Sub-Inspector Jayeerthi immediately fired a warning shot into the air, ordering Karthik to surrender. When the suspect ignored the warning and attempted to attack the officers again, the Sub-Inspector fired a second round, hitting Karthik in the leg. He collapsed and was promptly taken into custody before being transported to K.R. Hospital for treatment. City Police Commissioner Seema Latkar visited the hospital to gather information on the incident.

Accused Revealed as Repeat Offender

Police investigation into Karthik K.R. revealed a disturbing criminal history:

Karthik was previously arrested in Mandya on charges of attempted rape.

He had served two years in prison for the offense and was reportedly released just four months ago.

According to the police, the accused was intoxicated and roaming the area when he spotted the ten-year-old. He allegedly abducted, sexually assaulted, and brutally murdered the child before fleeing. CCTV footage confirmed his identity as the perpetrator of the crime.
