Reports: AIADMK and BJP in Separate Talks with Actor Vijay's TVK for 2026 Alliance

CHENNAI — Political circles in Tamil Nadu are abuzz with reports of high-stakes negotiations as both the AIADMK, led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami, and the central leadership of the BJP are allegedly holding separate, confidential discussions with actor-turned-politician Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

Sources suggest that AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami is proposing a significant alliance package to Vijay, purportedly including over 40 assembly seats and the position of Deputy Chief Minister. It is reported that Palaniswami and Vijay have already engaged in a direct telephone conversation, lasting over thirty minutes, to discuss a potential coalition aimed at unseating the ruling DMK government in the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections.

Concurrently, it is rumored that senior leaders from the BJP's central command have been in close contact with Vijay over the past 48 hours. The BJP's proposal is also said to involve a substantial offer of over 40 seats. Political insiders speculate that the national party is keen to bring the TVK into its fold to strengthen its position in the state, especially following the departure of former allies O. Panneerselvam and T. T. V. Dhinakaran. The AIADMK, which previously severed its alliance with the BJP, is now seemingly competing with them to secure Vijay's influential support.

According to sources within the AIADMK, Vijay has responded positively to Palaniswami's overtures without making a firm commitment. He reportedly indicated that his immediate focus is on touring the state and connecting with the electorate. Vijay has allegedly assured the AIADMK leadership that he will personally meet with Palaniswami during his campaign tour and that a final decision on any alliance will be made after January 2026, potentially following the Pongal festival.

The lengthy phone call also reportedly included Palaniswami expressing his personal condolences to Vijay regarding a recent incident in Karur and assuring him of the AIADMK's full support. A senior AIADMK leader from the state's western region has corroborated these reports, confirming that Palaniswami extended an invitation to form an alliance and that Vijay's response was constructive, promising a conclusive decision in early 2026.
