THANJAVUR: In a heart-wrenching incident that has left the region in shock, a father in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur district brutally murdered his three young children before surrendering to the police.
The accused, identified as Vinod Kumar (38), a hotel employee from Gopalasamudram, allegedly slit the throats of his children — Oviya (12), Keerthi (8), and Eeshwaran (5) — on Friday night, reportedly in a fit of rage and despair after being abandoned by his wife.
Marital Discord Turned Tragic
Vinod Kumar and his wife, Nithya (35), had been living together with their three children until about six months ago. According to police sources, Nithya developed a relationship with a man from Mannargudi through social media and eventually left her husband and children to live with him.
Following her departure, Vinod Kumar is said to have fallen into depression and taken to heavy drinking. Neighbours told police that he often scolded and verbally abused the children under the influence of alcohol.
The Night of the Crime
On the night of the incident, Vinod Kumar returned home intoxicated. He allegedly asked his daughters, Oviya and Keerthi, to go outside to fetch water and play for a while. When they stepped out, he took a sickle and slit the throat of his youngest son, Eeshwaran (5).
Moments later, when the girls returned, he attacked and killed both of them in the same brutal manner.
After committing the heinous act, Vinod Kumar walked to the nearest police station and surrendered, confessing to the murders.
Investigation Underway
Police officers rushed to the scene and recovered the children’s bodies, which were sent to the government hospital for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered, and Vinod Kumar has been taken into custody for further interrogation.
Preliminary investigation suggests that emotional distress, marital betrayal, and alcoholism were the key factors that drove him to commit the shocking crime.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and sorrow in Thanjavur, with residents expressing disbelief over the gruesome killing of three innocent children by their own father.
