Agra, Uttar Pradesh – Two young men sentenced to death for the abduction, sexual assault, and murder of a minor in March 2024 have been reportedly distressed since their incarceration. Jail authorities noted that the convicts, Amit Kushwaha and Nikhil, remained awake throughout the night and did not eat their evening meal following the verdict. Their behavior has reportedly changed since the court’s decision, prompting officials to provide counseling and closely monitor them.
The crime, which occurred on March 18, 2024, involved the abduction of a young girl playing near a canal in a village under Bah police station limits. The victim, along with other children, was approached by Amit Kushwaha, a relative from Farer village, and his accomplice Nikhil. The duo forcibly took the girl, sexually assaulted her, and ultimately strangled her to death using a piece of their own clothing.
Special Judge Sonia Chaudhary, presiding under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, handed down the death penalty to both perpetrators and subsequently sent them to the district jail. They were placed in the same barracks where they had previously been held, under close observation by jail staff.
The convicts had been in custody for approximately 19 months prior to the sentencing. Their bail applications were twice rejected by the High Court. Law enforcement officials, including EDG C. Subhash Giri, commended the prosecution for presenting a strong and compelling case that led to the conviction.
