New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government is preparing an extensive plan to project India’s global image during its presidency of BRICS, beginning January 1, 2026, according to an official document accessed by CNN-News18.
U.S. President Donald Trump recently described BRICS as “an attack on the U.S. dollar” and defended the imposition of tariffs against member nations.
Under India’s presidency, BRICS meetings are expected to be held across all 28 states and nine union territories, covering around 60 cities. Much like India’s successful G20 presidency, the goal is to present a pan-India image, showcasing the nation’s diverse cultural and historical heritage.
Cultural and Branding Initiatives
The government plans to launch an extensive branding and publicity campaign to popularize the BRICS logo, themes, priorities, and outcomes among both domestic and international audiences. A 3–4-minute BRICS theme song will reportedly be composed by a distinguished Indian musician of global acclaim, possibly a recipient of international awards.
BRICS currently includes 11 full members and 10 partner countries, among them India, Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. India aims to use its 2026 presidency to highlight its leadership role in institutional reform, climate finance, digital governance, and strengthening the voice of the Global South.
Planned Events and Activities
According to the document, the government has listed a series of activities to mark the year-long presidency. These include:
- A BRICS-themed kite festival
- Display of the BRICS logo using eco-friendly diyas during Diwali
- Holographic projections of the BRICS logo in major cities
- A BRICS-themed Republic Day tableau
- Branding on aircraft used for delegate transport
Integration with State Festivals
The BRICS branding will also feature prominently during major state festivals such as Kerala’s boat festival, Odisha’s International Sand Art Festival, and the Goa Carnival. The logo will appear on public transport systems, including metro trains, state-run buses, and railways.
Additional initiatives under consideration include drone shows in major cities and BRICS-themed food festivals.
India’s 2023 G20 presidency, which culminated in the unanimous adoption of the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration, reached 1.4 billion citizens through “Jan Bhagidari” (people’s participation) programs. Nearly 220 meetings were held in 60 cities across the country, including Jammu and Kashmir. The government now plans to replicate this successful model for India’s upcoming BRICS presidency in 2026.
