Dehradun: In a major breakthrough under Uttarakhand Chief Minister’s directive-led Operation Kalanemi, the Dehradun Police and the Local Intelligence Unit (LIU) arrested a Bangladeshi national who had been living in India using forged identity documents. The accused, Mamun Hasan (28), had assumed the identity of Sachin Chauhan and was residing in the city with the help of his Indian partner, Reena Chauhan, a resident of Thrini. The case has unfolded like a crime thriller, exposing a sophisticated identity fraud and illegal immigration operation.
How the Identity Fraud Was Orchestrated
Investigators revealed that Reena Chauhan provided her Bangladeshi partner with the identity details of her former husband, Sachin Chauhan. Using this information, Mamun secured fake Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, and other government documents, enabling him to live and work illegally in Dehradun for years. Police confirmed that he had even secured employment as a bouncer at a local club under the forged identity.
Dehradun SSP Ajay Singh stated that the district police have intensified action to identify and arrest individuals staying in the state using fake identities and forged documents. During this crackdown, credible intelligence was received regarding a Bangladeshi man illegally residing with an Indian woman in the Nehru Colony area.
A Cross-Border Love Story Turned Crime
During questioning, Mamun revealed that he first connected with Reena on Facebook. He visited India multiple times on a tourist visa between 2019 and 2021. In 2022, the couple illegally crossed the India–Bangladesh border to marry in Bangladesh. They later re-entered India unlawfully and settled in Dehradun.
The most alarming revelation came when police learned that Reena herself had arranged all forged documents for Mamun using her ex-husband’s details. Investigators suspect that several others assisted in acquiring these documents, indicating possible involvement of a larger network.
Arrests and Seizures from Alaknanda Enclave
Acting on confidential inputs, police conducted a raid at Alaknanda Enclave, arresting both Mamun and Reena. Officers recovered:
- Fake Aadhaar and PAN cards
- Multiple forged identity cards
- Digital and physical equipment used to produce fake documents
SSP Ajay Singh confirmed that intensive inspections and verification drives will continue across the district, and strict action will be taken against all illegal immigrants and those aiding them.
Wider Network Under Investigation
Police are currently investigating:
- Individuals involved in producing the forged documents
- The extent of the couple’s support network
- Possible links to organized human trafficking or illegal immigration syndicates
Officials expect significant revelations as the investigation progresses.
