Dhaka, Dec 1: Bangladesh’s Awami League on Monday accused the Muhammad Yunus–led interim government of undermining the spirit of the country’s hard-won independence, as the nation marks December as Victory Month, commemorating its triumph in the 1971 Liberation War against Pakistan.
In a strongly worded statement, the Awami League alleged that the current interim administration is attempting to erode the values upon which Bangladesh was founded.
“The real objective of today’s illegitimate, occupying ‘killer-fascist Yunus group’ is to diminish the glory of Bangladesh’s independence. As they serve external powers, they want the entire nation to accept that subservience unquestioningly,” the party said.
Recalling the historic events of December 16, 1971, the party highlighted the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, under whom the people of Bangladesh “broke the chains of a thousand years of subjugation” and secured their long-awaited freedom.
The Awami League claimed that since independence, both domestic and foreign anti-liberation forces have repeatedly attempted to undermine this achievement.
“They were troubled by the monumental success achieved through the united efforts of the Bengali people. To make independence meaningless, they repeatedly attacked the core values of the Liberation War—seeking to drag Bangladesh back towards a Pakistani ideology,” the statement read.
According to the party, these forces intensified their conspiracies whenever they found an opportunity. One such instance, it alleged, occurred in July–August 2024, when “through conspiracy, they forcibly removed Sheikh Hasina.”
Criticising the current state of governance under the interim administration, the Awami League accused the Yunus-led government of stripping citizens of their rights and constitutional protections.
“Factories and industries are shutting down. Hundreds of thousands of workers are losing their jobs. Farmers are being deprived of fertiliser. Social welfare allowances for the poor and vulnerable have been cancelled. People have no security for their lives or property. The nation’s economic capacity has collapsed,” the party claimed.
It further alleged that state power is being used to grant “illegal benefits to illegal occupiers,” accusing the interim government of acting as an extension of “foreign interests.”
As Victory Month begins, the Awami League called on all patriotic citizens, pro-Liberation forces, and party leaders and workers to unite under the ideals of the martyrs, the philosophy of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the enduring spirit of the Liberation War.
