A 24-year-old Indian student in the United States has died after sustaining severe injuries in a devastating house fire, according to the Consulate General of India in New York. The victim, identified as Sahaja Reddy Udumala, was pursuing her Master’s degree in Albany, New York.
The Consulate confirmed the incident in a post on X on Friday (local time), expressing profound grief over her loss.
“We are deeply saddened by the untimely demise of Ms. Sahaja Reddy Udumala, an Indian national, who lost her life in a house fire incident in Albany. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with her family during this difficult time. The Consulate is in touch with late Ms. Sahaja’s family and is extending all possible assistance,” the statement read.
The fatal fire broke out on December 4. According to the Albany Police Department, officers and firefighters arrived to find the residence completely engulfed in flames, with several occupants trapped inside. Emergency personnel located four adults within the home; all were treated at the scene before being transported to a hospital with serious injuries. Two of them were later shifted to a specialised burn centre for advanced treatment.
Tragically, Udumala succumbed to the critical injuries she sustained in the blaze, the police confirmed.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Udumala’s cousin, Rathna Gopu, has launched a fundraiser to support funeral and memorial arrangements, repatriation of the body to India, assistance for immediate family members, and other expenses arising from the incident.
