In a deeply disturbing case of alleged honour killing from Maharashtra’s Nanded district, a 21-year-old woman symbolically “married” the mortal remains of her boyfriend after he was allegedly shot and brutally bludgeoned to death by her father and brothers for opposing their inter-caste relationship.
According to police sources, 25-year-old Saksham Tate and Aanchal Mamidwar, 21, had been in a relationship for several years. Saksham, who had been released on bail just six weeks earlier, was known to Aanchal’s family as a close friend of her brother, Himesh Mamidwar. Both Saksham and Himesh reportedly had criminal backgrounds.
Aanchal’s father, Ganesh (Gajanan) Mamidwar, had recently discovered her relationship with Saksham and strongly objected to it due to caste differences. Tensions escalated on the evening of November 27, when Saksham was standing with friends in the Juna Ganj area of Nanded. A confrontation broke out between him and Himesh, during which Himesh allegedly opened fire. The bullet pierced Saksham’s ribs, and Himesh then smashed a tile on his head, killing him instantly.
Police have arrested Himesh, his brother Sahil Mamidwar (25), and their father Gajanan Mamidwar (45), along with two others. All accused have been remanded to police custody for three days.
The following day, as preparations were underway for Saksham’s final rites, Aanchal arrived at his residence in a state of profound grief. In an emotional and symbolic gesture, she announced her decision to “marry” him despite his death. Eyewitnesses told PTI that she performed traditional wedding rituals, applying turmeric and vermilion to his body.
“Even after his death, I will remain his,” she said tearfully. “I want justice. I want the accused to be hanged.”
Speaking to reporters, Aanchal revealed that she had been in a relationship with Saksham for three years and had faced repeated threats from her family. “My family often threatened to kill Saksham, and now my father and brothers have done it,” she alleged. She also expressed her intention to remain at Saksham’s residence going forward.
Police have booked six individuals under charges related to murder, unlawful assembly, rioting, provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and the Arms Act, PTI reported.
The investigation is ongoing.
