Bhopal: A serious security breach has been reported at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhopal, after a woman doctor was robbed inside a hospital elevator. CCTV footage of the incident, which shows the theft taking place in broad daylight, has gone viral on social media, triggering widespread concern over safety arrangements at one of the country’s premier medical institutions.
The incident occurred on Monday evening and involved a female staff member from the gynaecology department, identified as Varsha Soni. According to officials, the doctor entered a lift in the blood bank building when a man, dressed in decent attire, accompanied her inside. Pretending to seek directions to the ophthalmology department, the suspect engaged her in conversation to divert her attention.
As the lift reached its destination and the doors opened, the man swiftly snatched the doctor’s mangalsutra and fled the scene. Though visibly shocked, the doctor attempted to chase the accused, but he managed to escape before security personnel could intervene. AIIMS भोपाल के अंदर का हाल।

CCTV Footage Proves Crucial
The entire incident was captured on the lift’s CCTV camera, with the footage clearly showing the suspect’s movements. Despite wearing a face covering, the man did not appear suspicious based on his clothing or behaviour, making it difficult for the victim to anticipate the crime.
The video was shared on social media platform X by former AIIMS employee Narendra Nath Mishra, who expressed alarm over the incident. In his post, he described the occurrence as deeply troubling, particularly given that it took place within a high-security medical facility.
Questions Raised Over Hospital Security
The robbery has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of security measures at AIIMS Bhopal, which is equipped with round-the-clock security staff and surveillance systems. Doctors, patients, and visitors have expressed fear and concern, noting that crimes commonly associated with streets and public transport are now occurring inside hospital premises.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation, reviewing CCTV footage from multiple locations within the hospital to identify and apprehend the suspect. Authorities have assured that efforts are underway to strengthen security protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The episode has once again highlighted growing concerns over safety in public institutions and the urgent need for tighter security, especially in spaces meant to offer care and protection.
