Gwalior Woman Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Murder of Five-Year-Old Son

Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh: In a case that shocked the nation, a court in Gwalior has sentenced a woman to life imprisonment for killing her five-year-old son, fearing that the child would expose her extramarital relationship.

The convict, Jyoti Rathod, wife of police constable Dhyan Singh Rathod, was found guilty of pushing her son, Jatin, from the rooftop of their residential building, leading to his death. The court held that the crime was premeditated and driven by an attempt to conceal her illicit relationship with a neighbour.

The incident occurred on April 28, 2023. According to the prosecution, Jyoti was involved in a secret relationship with a local youth, Uday Indolia. On the day of the incident, the child allegedly witnessed an intimate encounter between his mother and her partner. When Jatin threatened to inform his father about what he had seen, Jyoti, in a moment of rage and fear, pushed him from the second-floor terrace of the house.

The child sustained critical injuries and succumbed within 24 hours while undergoing treatment.

Initially, the incident was registered as an accidental fall. However, two weeks later, Jyoti reportedly confessed the crime to her husband. Demonstrating remarkable resolve, Dhyan Singh Rathod secretly recorded her confession on his mobile phone and approached the police with the audio evidence, along with CCTV footage from their residence. This evidence proved crucial in unraveling the truth behind the child’s death.

During the trial, Jyoti’s alleged partner, Uday Indolia, was also named as an accused. However, due to lack of conclusive evidence against him, the court acquitted Indolia. In contrast, the prosecution successfully established Jyoti’s guilt through digital evidence, witness testimonies, and forensic findings.

Taking into account the gravity of the offence and the betrayal of maternal trust, the court convicted Jyoti Rathod and sentenced her to life imprisonment, bringing closure to a case that highlighted both extreme human cruelty and a father’s determination to seek justice for his son.
