Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh on Friday responded to a Calcutta High Court directive asking the West Bengal government to hand over land to the Border Security Force (BSF) for the construction of fencing along the India–Bangladesh border, asserting that the state had already transferred the required land.
Addressing the media, Ghosh alleged serious lapses on the part of the BSF in discharging its border security responsibilities. He said the state government had fulfilled its obligation by providing land wherever required, but questioned why infiltration continued despite the BSF’s expanded operational jurisdiction.
Key Allegations by Kunal Ghosh
Land transfer completed: Ghosh maintained that the West Bengal government had already handed over the necessary land to the BSF for fencing works. He questioned why cross-border infiltration persisted even after the BSF’s area of operation was extended from 15 km to 50 km from the international border.
Failure in border security:
He alleged that illegal crossings continue even in areas where fencing has already been erected, and stressed that preventing such incidents falls squarely under the BSF’s mandate, not that of the state police.
Political motivation alleged:
Ghosh further claimed that certain disputes over border security were being politically motivated, suggesting that vested interests were attempting to create controversy over an issue linked to national security.
Court Order and Background
The Calcutta High Court, while reviewing deficiencies in fencing along the Bangladesh border, had earlier directed the state government to expedite the land handover process to facilitate faster construction.
While declining to comment directly on the court’s order, Ghosh indicated that the Trinamool Congress believes the efficiency and accountability of security agencies must also be scrutinised.
The West Bengal government has also complained that fencing work has not been completed by the BSF even in areas where land has already been handed over. The matter is scheduled for its next hearing on February 14, 2026.
