Chennai: One person was killed and at least 18 others sustained injuries after a helium gas cylinder exploded during the Thenpennai River Festival in Manalurpettai, located in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district, officials said on Tuesday.
Confirming the incident, Tiruvannamalai District Collector K. Tharpagaraj stated that the injured were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. “One person has died and at least 18 people have been injured following the explosion of a helium cylinder during the Thenpennai River Festival in Manalurpettai,” he said.
The cylinder, reportedly being used to fill balloons at the festival venue, exploded unexpectedly, triggering panic among attendees and leading to multiple injuries.
Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended his condolences to the bereaved family.
“I am deeply saddened to learn about the tragic incident in which one person lost their life and several others were seriously injured after a helium gas cylinder used for filling balloons exploded at the river festival in Manalurpet, Kallakurichi district,” Palaniswami said in a statement. “I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and pray for the speedy and complete recovery of all those injured.”
He also urged the state government to provide immediate and adequate compensation to the family of the deceased as well as to those injured in the accident.
Separate Road Accident Injures 10
In a separate incident in Kallakurichi district, at least 10 people were injured after a lorry overturned on the Chennai–Trichy National Highway (NH-45), triggering a collision involving three luxury buses. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, and traffic was temporarily disrupted following the accident.
Authorities are investigating both incidents, while emergency services continue to monitor the condition of those injured.
