Indore Murder Case: Classmate Arrested for Alleged Rape, Killing and Circulation of Video

Indore: Police in Indore have arrested a 25-year-old man on charges of raping and murdering his classmate and allegedly circulating a video of the assault in a college WhatsApp group, in a case that has sent shockwaves through the city.

The accused, identified as Piyush Dhanotia, a resident of Mandsaur district in Madhya Pradesh, was taken into custody following the discovery of the woman’s partially decomposed body in his rented accommodation on Friday.

According to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Dishesh Agrawal, the victim had been reported missing on February 10. The following day, videos purportedly showing her with a man were circulated in their college WhatsApp group. While the woman’s face was visible in the footage, the man’s identity was not immediately clear.

Police said that on Friday, local residents alerted authorities after noticing a foul smell emanating from the accused’s locked room. Officers forced entry and recovered the woman’s body in a semi-decomposed state.

Allegations and Interrogation

Deputy Commissioner of Police Shrikrishna Lalchandani stated that during interrogation, the accused admitted to strangling the woman. Officials further indicated that he allegedly forced her into sexual relations and killed her when she resisted.

Investigators said Dhanotia has been inconsistent in his statements and continues to change his version of events during questioning. He is accused of locking the room after the crime and fleeing the area.

Police sources described the details of the case as deeply disturbing, with reports suggesting that even an officer involved in the investigation was emotionally affected by the nature of the evidence.

In contrast, the accused appeared calm when confronted by reporters. In a video circulating online, he is seen responding to questions without visible remorse. “Whatever had to happen has happened,” he reportedly said, adding that he would reveal more “when the time comes.”

Further Claims and Ongoing Probe

Authorities also stated that the accused allegedly travelled to Navi Mumbai while absconding and claimed to have performed occult rituals in an attempt to “communicate” with the victim’s spirit. Police said he has claimed mental distress following the incident, though investigators are continuing to examine these assertions.

Meanwhile, the victim’s father has alleged that the accused had been blackmailing his daughter with obscene photographs and had threatened to circulate them. He further claimed that such material was shared in the college WhatsApp group as part of an attempt to extort money.

Police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and further forensic and digital evidence is being analysed as part of the case.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage and renewed concerns over digital harassment, violence against women, and the misuse of private images.
