Kolkata: A strong earthquake rattled Kolkata on Friday afternoon, sending residents rushing out of homes and offices as tremors were felt across the city.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the quake measured 5.5 on the Richter scale and struck at a depth of 10 kilometres. The tremor occurred at approximately 1:52 pm local time, with its epicentre located in southwestern Bangladesh.
Earlier, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) had recorded the earthquake at a magnitude of 5.3, confirming that the epicentre lay about 26 kilometres southeast of Taki, near the India–Bangladesh border region.
Tremors Felt Across the City
Residents in several neighbourhoods reported noticeable shaking, particularly in multi-storey buildings. Ceiling fans swayed, furniture trembled, and windows rattled as the tremor passed through the city.
Swagata, a resident of Kolkata, recounted the moment the quake struck. “We were sitting on our sofa when we suddenly felt the tremors. We rushed out of our house. The sofa and fan were shaking, and a bottle kept on a table fell down. All of us ran downstairs,” she said, describing the sudden panic that gripped many households.
While the shaking lasted only a short duration, it was strong enough to cause alarm across residential and commercial areas. There were no immediate reports of major structural damage or casualties at the time of writing.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, urging residents to remain calm while adhering to standard safety protocols in the event of aftershocks.
