The new law will apply when you take your driving test from March 9, 2026 in Ireland

The new insurance law will apply when you take your driving test from March 9, 2026.

Prepare your car for your test

You will need to provide a vehicle for your driving test, and you must:

  • You must have insurance to drive and display a valid original insurance disc (white background with a green band on the left side). This must clearly show your vehicle's registration number (or fleet name) and policy dates.

Effective   March 9, 2026 , you must also provide a valid motor insurance certificate showing that you are insured to drive the vehicle presented for inspection. If your name is not on the insurance certificate, you will also need to provide an email or letter (in your name) from your insurance company stating that you are insured to drive the vehicle presented for inspection. Other people's names or personal information on the documents can be removed or redacted. The documents will be viewed by the examiner and returned to you.

  • Display a valid original motor tax disc on your vehicle.
  • Display: a valid  NCT discOpen in new browser taIf applicable
  • Display L-plates (a rectangular plate or sign bearing the letter 'L' in red not less than fifteen centimeters high on a white background and a border of at least 2 centimeters) on the front and rear of your vehicle.
  • Read and sign a statement confirming that your vehicle is roadworthy and that insurance coverage is in place and adequate.

Important notice for drivers preparing for driving tests

Citroen and DS Automobiles Ireland have issued an emergency safety recall for the Citroen C3 (2008–2017) and DS3 (2009–2019) models.

Owners are advised not to drive these vehicles until the airbags are replaced by an authorized dealership.

If your car is damaged and you are taking a driving test, you will need to:

✅ Use another vehicle for your inspection, or

✅ Reschedule or cancel your appointment, or

✅ Provide proof of your car being repaired before the inspection.

Check if your vehicle has any faults using the Citroen online recall checker (you will need the vehicle identification number / VIN).

The information displayed on your vehicle must clearly show all the details required by law. If the details are faded, you must replace the relevant disc before your inspection.

If you have booked a driving test and are unable to get an appointment at your chosen NCT centre before your test date, you can call the NCT on 01 4135992 as soon as possible to get an appointment on priority.

The person taking the test must have proper insurance coverage to drive the vehicle used for the driving test.

Important things to note:

  • Named Driver: If you are using your own car or a friend's car for the test, the name of the person taking the test must be added as a 'Named Driver' on that car's insurance policy.
  • Insurance Disc: A valid original insurance disc must be affixed to the windscreen of the vehicle.

New law (from March 2026):  From March 9, 2026, you must carry your insurance certificate when you take your driving test. It must clearly state the driver's name. If the name is not on the certificate, you must carry an official letter (Letter of confirmation) from the insurance company. More information about this is available on the Road Safety Authority (RSA) website.

Open Driving does not apply:  Most 'Open Driving' insurance policies do not cover those with a Learner Permit. Therefore, they will have to be added to the policy by name (Named Driver).

Instructor's vehicle:  If you are using a driving instructor's (ADI) vehicle for the test, their insurance will also cover you.

How to add insurance?

You can add the learner driver to your policy by calling your insurance company (for example AXA, Allianz, or Aviva) and providing them with their learner driver's permit number and date of birth. This may cost you a small additional fee.

If you have completed 12 EDT lessons, you may be eligible for special discounts on insurance.
