Hyderabad : A sophisticated fraud scheme has come to light in Hyderabad, where a man allegedly duped multiple jewellery stores by swapping genuine gold rings with fake ones, using deception rather than force.
Over the past two months, several well-known jewellery outlets in the Kukatpally area reported a series of unusual incidents that initially went unnoticed. Customers appeared to browse and leave as usual, but inventory checks later revealed discrepancies—real gold rings had been replaced with counterfeit items.
Modus Operandi: Trust First, Theft Later
According to investigators, the accused—identified as Merugu Sagar—would enter showrooms posing as a genuine customer. Dressed ordinarily and behaving confidently, he would engage staff in casual conversation and request to see the latest ring collections.
He would carefully examine the jewellery, often trying rings on his fingers or inspecting them under light, creating the impression of a serious buyer. At the opportune moment, when staff attention briefly shifted, he would swiftly replace a genuine ring with a fake one he had concealed.
The switch was executed with remarkable precision and speed, making it nearly impossible for nearby staff to detect the act in real time. Within moments, the original ring would be in his possession, while the counterfeit item remained on display.
After completing the swap, he would quietly leave the store—sometimes without making a purchase, or by offering a casual excuse.
Multiple Showrooms Targeted
Police say the incidents were not isolated. During January and February, the accused allegedly targeted several prominent jewellery outlets in Kukatpally, including stores located in CMR Shopping Mall and outlets of Malabar Gold & Diamonds.
The fraud came to light only after store owners conducted routine stock verifications and noticed inconsistencies. Subsequent reviews of CCTV footage revealed the same individual visiting multiple stores, raising suspicions.
Arrest and Ongoing Investigation
During interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed to the scheme, admitting that he deliberately targeted busy and reputed showrooms to avoid suspicion. His strategy relied on building trust, waiting for the right moment, and executing the swap without creating any disturbance.
Police are now investigating whether he was involved in similar offences in other areas or cities, and are also examining his criminal background.
Advisory to Jewellery Traders
In the wake of the incident, authorities have urged jewellery shop owners to remain vigilant, closely monitor customer interactions, and strengthen surveillance measures to prevent such deceptive crimes.
