India Moves to Diversify Energy Sourcing Amid Global Disruptions, MEA Signals Readiness to Import from Russia

Delhi: Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday reaffirmed India’s strategy to secure energy supplies from a wide range of global sources, stating that New Delhi remains prepared to procure LPG and crude oil from any available market—including Russia—amid escalating geopolitical tensions.

Addressing a press briefing, the MEA highlighted ongoing efforts to diversify energy procurement in response to disruptions linked to instability in West Asia, particularly along the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

“We are trying to source LPG from multiple markets. If required, we are open to procuring supplies from Russia as well,” the MEA spokesperson said, underscoring India’s flexible and pragmatic approach to energy security.

Reiterating the government’s broader policy, the ministry noted that India continues to import oil from various regions worldwide. “We have multiple tankers en route and a diversified supply base. Our procurement strategy includes sourcing from a range of countries, including Russia,” the spokesperson added.

Supply Stability and Domestic Measures

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has assured that crude oil supplies remain stable, with refineries operating at full capacity. Fuel distribution across the country continues without disruption, with petrol pumps functioning normally and no reported shortages. Supplies of piped natural gas (PNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) are also being maintained at full capacity.

To manage demand effectively, authorities are encouraging commercial LPG users to transition to PNG in areas where infrastructure is available. This shift is being supported through incentives and expedited connection processes.

In addition, enforcement measures have been strengthened to curb hoarding and black marketing. State governments have activated control rooms and intensified inspections to ensure smooth distribution.

The Centre has also advised states to allocate an additional 10% of commercial LPG to support the expansion of PNG networks. Consumers have been urged to rely on official communications, avoid panic buying, and opt for home delivery of LPG cylinders.

Rising Global Concerns

The measures come against the backdrop of escalating tensions in West Asia and recent disruptions to maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz—a critical artery that handles nearly 20% of global oil and gas supplies.

The evolving situation has heightened concerns for energy-import dependent nations such as India, prompting proactive steps to safeguard supply chains and maintain domestic energy stability.
