Maharashtra: A college professor in Maharashtra has been arrested following allegations of sending obscene messages to a female student and pressuring her into a relationship, police officials said. The incident has sparked widespread concern in the region.
The case was reported from Karad in Satara district, where the accused is associated with a college in the Umbraj area. According to the complaint, the professor allegedly sent objectionable messages to the student via social media on March 12 and attempted to coerce her into a personal relationship.
Disturbed by the messages, the student informed her family, who subsequently approached the local police. A formal complaint was filed at the Umbraj police station.
Acting swiftly on the complaint, police registered a case against the accused and took him into custody. Authorities stated that the investigation is ongoing and that digital evidence, including messages shared by the student, is being examined as part of the probe.
Officials are also looking into whether the accused had engaged in similar misconduct in the past.
The incident has triggered strong reactions from local residents and parents, who have called for strict action against such behaviour in educational institutions. They emphasised that such incidents pose a serious threat to the safety and well-being of students.
Police have assured that appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
