Lebanon Moves Against Hezbollah After Reported Escalation With Israel

In the wake of reports surrounding the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, tensions in the region have sharply intensified, prompting decisive action from the government of Lebanon against Hezbollah.

Lebanon has issued an order imposing restrictions on Hezbollah, explicitly directing the group not to launch attacks against Israel. The move is widely viewed as an attempt by the Lebanese government to prevent further escalation along the volatile border. However, analysts warn that the decision could deepen internal tensions between the state and the Iran-backed militant group.

Hezbollah’s influence within Lebanon has reportedly been under strain since the 2024 conflict with Israel, during which the group sustained significant setbacks. Observers suggest that the latest government action signals a shift in Lebanon’s internal political balance, marking one of the most assertive stances taken against Hezbollah since the country’s 1975–1990 civil war.

Meanwhile, Israel has carried out intensified airstrikes in Beirut’s southern suburbs and other parts of Lebanon in response to Hezbollah’s drone and rocket attacks. According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, at least 31 people were killed in the strikes, underscoring the growing humanitarian and security concerns as hostilities mount.

Regional observers caution that the situation remains highly volatile, with fears that further retaliatory actions could draw the wider Middle East into renewed instability.
