Security Forces Dismantle Illegal Bunkers in Manipur’s Ukhrul Amid Rising Violence

Manipur: Amid escalating tensions in the Ukhrul district, security forces have launched a major operation, dismantling six illegal bunkers allegedly constructed by armed groups in the Litan area, police said.

The bunkers, strategically positioned to facilitate attacks, were reportedly used in recent incidents of gunfire that left several people injured. Officials described the operation as a significant step toward restoring stability in the region, even as tensions continue to persist.

According to a police statement, the joint operation was carried out in Litan, Mongkot Chepu, and adjoining upper villages. Security personnel systematically identified and demolished the structures as part of an ongoing crackdown on militant infrastructure.

The action follows a series of violent incidents in the area. In a recent exchange of gunfire in Litan, at least three individuals were injured, heightening fear among residents, particularly as the clashes occurred close to civilian settlements.

The unrest is unfolding against the backdrop of escalating tensions between the Kuki and Tangkhul Naga communities in the Litan–Sari Khong region. In February, violent clashes between the two groups resulted in more than 30 houses being set ablaze, leaving the area deeply unsettled.

Since then, sporadic incidents of violence have been reported in nearby villages, including Mongkot Chepu and Sharkaphung, further intensifying the fragile security situation. Residents continue to live under a cloud of fear, with normal life significantly disrupted.

Additional firing incidents earlier this week also underscored the volatility of the region. Two members of the Tangkhul Naga community were injured in a shooting in Sharkaphung in Kamjong district, while a Kuki woman was wounded in a separate incident in Mongkot Chepu.

Police said security forces remain actively deployed in the region, conducting search operations and area domination exercises to prevent further escalation. Surveillance has been intensified in sensitive and border areas, with officials closely monitoring developments and warning that further measures will be taken if required.

Despite the recent operation, authorities acknowledge that the situation remains tense, with the potential for further flare-ups.
