KANPUR – In a swift and decisive operation, the Kanpur Police have arrested the primary suspect in the harrowing rape and murder of a minor girl.
The arrest took place late Wednesday night following a high-stakes encounter near an abandoned brick kiln on the outskirts of the victim's village. Acting on a tip-off, police cordoned off the area where the suspect was reportedly hiding. Upon being challenged, the accused allegedly opened fire on the police party. In the retaliatory firing that followed, the suspect sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg and was subsequently overpowered and taken into custody.
The case surfaced after the minor, who had gone to the fields to graze goats, was reported missing. Investigations reveal a chilling sequence of events: the accused allegedly lured the girl away under the pretext of collecting leaves from a tree. Preliminary reports suggest that the suspect and his brother, reportedly in an inebriated state, sexually assaulted the girl before murdering her to conceal the crime. A forensic breakthrough was achieved when a dog squad traced soil residue from the burial site to a room behind the suspect’s residence. Authorities also noted a pre-existing land dispute between the two families, which is currently being probed as a possible contributing factor.
The brutal nature of the crime sparked intense protests, with villagers and local organizations initially refusing to conduct the final rites until the suspects' homes were demolished. Tensions escalated on Wednesday afternoon, leading to a brief skirmish with the police that necessitated the use of mild force to restore order. To pacify the grieving family and ensure justice, SDM Sadar Anubhav Kumar announced a comprehensive relief package under the Rani Laxmibai Scheme, including financial assistance of ₹10 lakh, additional support from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, and provisions for land, housing, and a government job for a family member.
Following these administrative assurances, the family consented to the cremation, which was performed under heavy security 22 hours after the body was recovered. The victim’s post-mortem, conducted on Tuesday afternoon, confirmed the gravity of the assault. The Kanpur Police have emphasized that with the primary accused in custody, they are moving rapidly to file a chargesheet and ensure a fast-track trial to deliver justice for the victim and her family
