Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday asserted that the proposed delimitation exercise will be conducted without discrimination among states, irrespective of their size or geographic location.
Speaking during the special session of Parliament convened to deliberate on the women’s reservation and delimitation bills, the Prime Minister sought to allay concerns raised by several states, emphasising that the process would ensure fairness and equity.
Elaborating on the Delimitation Bill, Modi suggested that opposition to the exercise was being driven by political considerations. He, however, offered strong assurances that no region would face injustice.
“Some are creating issues for political benefit. I want to state with full responsibility that whether it is the North or the South, large states or smaller ones, there will be no discrimination and no injustice in this process. I give my assurance—call it a promise or a guarantee—that fairness will be maintained,” he said.
The remarks come amid an ongoing debate over the potential impact of delimitation on the representation of various states in Parliament.
