Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma on Saturday launched a sharp political attack on former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, accusing him of hypocrisy and alleging the construction of a lavish residence, which he described as “Sheesh Mahal 2.”
Addressing a press conference, Verma claimed that Kejriwal had betrayed the people of Delhi by embracing luxury despite earlier projecting himself as a proponent of simple living. Drawing a parallel with cinematic sequels, he alleged that just as a sequel follows a film, the former Chief Minister had replicated an earlier controversy over alleged extravagance in official housing.
Verma further criticised Kejriwal’s tenure during the COVID-19 pandemic, alleging that construction work on his residence continued uninterrupted even as citizens faced severe shortages of medical resources.
Allegations Over Residences in Punjab
The BJP leader also accused Kejriwal of shifting his political base to Punjab following electoral setbacks in Delhi, claiming that several senior leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party had occupied government accommodations near the residence of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
He named leaders including Satyendar Jain, Sanjay Singh, and Manish Sisodia as part of this arrangement, alleging that their presence had added pressure on the Punjab administration.
Fresh Claims Over Delhi Bungalow
Turning to developments in Delhi, Verma referred to Kejriwal’s reported move into a government-allotted bungalow at Lodhi Estate, alleging that the property reflects a highly luxurious lifestyle inconsistent with his earlier public stance.
He further claimed that the expenditure on the residence was not borne by public funds but through private sources, raising questions over the nature and transparency of such investments.
Backdrop of Political Turbulence
The remarks come amid heightened political tensions following a significant setback for AAP, as several of its Rajya Sabha members—including Raghav Chadha, Ashok Mittal, Sandeep Pathak, Harbhajan Singh, Swati Maliwal, Vikram Sahney, and Rajendra Gupta—recently exited the party, intensifying scrutiny of its leadership.
AAP Rejects Allegations
Responding to the accusations, AAP strongly denied the claims, with senior leader Atishi describing the allegations as “false and misleading.”
Atishi asserted that the images circulated by Verma did not depict Kejriwal’s residence and challenged BJP leaders to make their own residences public for scrutiny. She stated that Kejriwal would also be willing to open his residence, allowing citizens to independently assess the claims.
She further warned that those spreading what she termed misinformation could face legal consequences, including defamation proceedings.
Escalating Political Rhetoric
The exchange marks a fresh escalation in political rhetoric between the BJP and AAP, with both sides trading allegations over governance, transparency, and personal conduct. The controversy is likely to remain a focal point in the evolving political landscape ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
