A 28-year-old carpenter has been arrested in Assam’s Cachar district for the alleged murder of his seven-month-pregnant wife, in a case suspected to be linked to a domestic dispute over an extramarital relationship, police said on Friday.
The accused, identified as Beru Mia Laskar, a resident of the Jirighat area, was taken into custody following the death of his wife, Rabia Begum (26). The couple had been married for six years and were living in a rented house in the Madhurbond locality. They have two children, and Rabia was carrying their third child at the time of the incident.
According to police sources, the victim’s family was informed by the accused on Monday night that she had been admitted in a critical condition to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH). However, when family members arrived at the hospital, they found that she had already died.
Relatives of the deceased have alleged foul play. Rabia’s cousin, Romij Uddin, claimed that there were visible marks on her neck, suggesting strangulation. He further alleged that the accused had physically assaulted her and kicked her in the abdomen.
The family also stated that Rabia had previously faced repeated instances of domestic abuse. “She had left his house several times due to harassment, but we persuaded her to return each time. This time, the situation escalated beyond control,” Uddin said.
However, the accused has denied the allegations of murder, claiming that his wife died by suicide.
Police have registered a case and initiated a detailed investigation. Authorities said further findings will depend on the post-mortem report and forensic evidence.
