Vilnius: For the first time since the start of the Ukraine-Russia war, an airstrike warning has been issued in the capital of a European Union-NATO member state.
Lithuania's capital Vilnius was put on alert on Wednesday morning after a Russian drone attack was threatened. This brought public life in the city to a complete standstill and people sought refuge in emergency underground bunkers and safe havens.
The message reached people's mobile phones at around 10.20 am on Wednesday. The order was to immediately move to safe places or bunkers. After people moved to safe places, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė and members of parliament were moved to high-security underground bunkers. Air and train services in the city were completely suspended.
The panic was caused by the Lithuanian military detecting the radar signal of a drone heading towards the city of Vilnius from Belarusian airspace. This led to NATO fighter jets being deployed on alert along the border. The European Union subsequently came out with criticism against Russia and Belarus.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Russia bears full responsibility for such provocations on NATO borders. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also added that Russia's illegal occupation is the reason for the drones launched by Ukraine being diverted towards NATO countries due to Russia's powerful electronic jamming (GPS Jamming) technology.
