Safety lapse during bungee jumping: Young woman dies tragically

A 21-year-old woman died tragically after being thrown off a bungee jump by staff after she forgot to tie her safety rope. The incident took place in Brazil. The woman fell from a height of 130 feet.

​Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas fell to her death during a bungee jump organized by a private company at the Skeleton Bridge in Limeri, a city in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo. Footage has already emerged of two employees calmly picking up the 21-year-old and throwing her down. No one noticed that the woman was not wearing a rope.

In the video that emerged, people standing around can be heard shouting in panic, "Rope, rope," in the moments after the young woman was thrown down. The emergency services were immediately informed, but they confirmed that the young woman had died at the scene. The body was recovered and shifted to the Legal Medical Institute for further procedures.

​Police arrested six people at the scene. Police have launched an investigation to determine whether criminal charges can be filed against those involved in organizing and running the event. Investigators are expected to examine whether safety procedures, employee responsibilities, and established standards were followed before the jump.

​Maria had shared pictures from the scene on social media shortly before the accident. One of the pictures showed the bridge and her jump wristbands. Local media reported that Maria's fiancé was also at the scene when the tragedy occurred. Reports also suggest that he was given medical attention after learning of Maria's death.

​The incident has sparked widespread concern about safety standards in adventure tourism destinations. Murilo Flix, the mayor of Limeira, said he would file a complaint with the Brazilian federal government's Justice Council, depending on the safety conditions in the area, and ensure accountability. Flix said he needed to find out who was responsible for the lapse in access control to an area where the risk had existed for years and where the necessary safety precautions were not taken.
