Strict Restrictions on Power Bank Usage on UAE Flights; Action to Be Taken for Violations

DUBAI - Leading UAE-based airlines have announced strict new regulations on the usage of power banks to ensure passenger safety. 

Airlines including Emirates, Etihad Airways, flydubai, and Air Arabia have issued these new guidelines. The UAE airlines decided to tighten aviation safety rules following a recent power bank fire incident on a China Eastern Airlines flight.

Complete Ban on In-Flight Charging

Under the new safety standards, charging mobile phones or other electronic devices using a power bank during the flight is completely prohibited. Additionally, recharging the power bank itself using the aircraft's USB ports or power sockets is banned. Power banks must remain switched off throughout the entire journey.

Only One Power Bank Per Person; Capacity Limits Apply

According to the revised rules, a passenger is allowed to carry only one power bank with a maximum capacity of 100Wh (Watt-hour). The capacity (Wh rating) must be clearly printed on the power bank. Officials stated that power banks without any visible markings or labels will not be permitted on board.

Storage Prohibited in Overhead Bins

Power banks must only be carried in hand luggage (carry-on baggage). They are strictly prohibited in checked-in luggage under any circumstances. Furthermore, storing power banks in the aircraft's overhead baggage cabins is now banned. To ensure the cabin crew can easily manage them in an emergency, they must only be stored under the seat in front or in the seatback pocket.

Why This Restriction?

Airlines have taken this precaution due to the risk of lithium-ion battery-operated power banks overheating (thermal runaway) and causing a fire. If a fire breaks out while stored in overhead bins, it is difficult for the cabin crew to detect and control quickly. However, Emirates officials explained that keeping them in seat pockets allows safety staff to extinguish fires much faster.

Alternative Options for Passengers

Although the use of power banks is banned, passengers can still charge their phones and other devices using the aircraft's in-seat power sockets. Therefore, airlines advise passengers to keep their charging cables in their hand luggage before travelling. Passengers should prepare in advance, as power banks that do not meet these conditions are likely to be confiscated during airport security checks.
