Death Toll Tops 250 as Desperate Rescuers Comb Rubble Following Massive Colombia Earthquake

BOGOTÁ — Search-and-rescue teams worked through grueling conditions across western Colombia, racing against time as the confirmed death toll from a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake surpassed 250, with thousands more reported missing.

The disaster—the strongest to strike the country in a decade—hit early Monday morning, reducing apartment blocks, hospitals, and historic structures to ruins across multiple departments. As aftershocks continued to rattle the region, the government declared a national state of emergency to mobilize immediate disaster relief.

A Race Against Time in the Rubble

Municipal authorities report that more than 2,500 people sustained injuries, while digital tracking databases list upwards of 3,900 individuals still unaccounted for.

* Hard-Hit Cities: The cities of Pereira and Cali bore the brunt of the catastrophe, recording massive structural failures, including collapsed residential complexes and partial collapses of critical healthcare facilities.

In towns near the epicenter in the Chocó department and surrounding Andean valleys, local residents and volunteers have joined military and civil defense units, forming human chains to sift through mounds of pulverized concrete with buckets and bare hands.

Offers of assistance and financial aid have begun pouring in from the international community, including millions in emergency support pledged by the United States and specialized rescue teams arriving from neighboring nations. 

However, officials warn that the death toll will likely continue to climb as heavy machinery reaches more isolated communities cut off by landslides and damaged infrastructure.
